This Digital Literacy course offers a comprehensive exploration of essential digital skills, focusing on privacy, security, data management, and effective online communication. Over four weeks, participants will engage with practical exercises, collaborative projects, and interactive lessons designed to enhance their digital fluency, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the digital world securely and efficiently.

This course supports the following policy areas and objectives:

Course Structure:

4 weeks of 2 hour ‘live on line’ classes per week

The Digital Literacy course is structured over four weeks, with each week dedicated to a specific theme that builds upon the previous one, leading to a comprehensive understanding of digital literacy and cybersecurity.

This course is ideal for anyone – individuals and professionals across various sectors who seek to enhance their digital skills in alignment with Europe’s digital decade policies.

Certification:

Confirmation Exercise: A comprehensive exercise that combines various aspects of the course content, validating the participant’s digital literacy and security awareness.

Certification: Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Digital Literacy Certificate, affirming their competency in navigating the digital world securely and responsibly.

 

Prerequisite

POSSE Individual Profile: Participants should have a basic understanding of online scams, social engineering, and the importance of online protection. This prerequisite ensures that learners start with a foundation in online safety and security.

Andrew Quinn – Course Manager (Head of PAT Fintech & Financial Services at PAT Business School)

As Head of PAT Fintech, Andrew actively collaborates with the diverse Fintech ecosystem – whether they be ‘new’ Fintech companies or an ‘incumbent/traditional’ Financial Institutions that are providing tech-nologically enabled financial services/products – to develop a range of training courses that are designed, and delivered, in conjunction with industry bodies, professional bodies, and experienced financial service professionals.

Before transitioning into education, Andrew had a broad experience in the financial services industry, including working for banks, hedge funds, an investment consultancy, and co-funding two Fintech related start-ups.

 

Graham Day – Course Leader (Founder at CyberGuardian.ie)

Graham is a seasoned Cloud Compliance Program Manager at Genesys, bringing over two decades of expertise in security and counter-intelligence from the UK Public Sector to the forefront of cloud computing and data compliance. His career commenced in high-threat, high-risk environments, where he delivered comprehensive security and counter-intelligence support, laying a foundation of resilience and strategic acumen.

Transitioning from public service, Graham became a CESG Listed Advisor, extending his expertise as a Security Information Risk Advisor across both public and private sectors. He is recognized as a specialist in Data Centre (DC) security and compliance, having developed UK Government guidance for DC Security and managed responsibilities across multiple territories. His roles have expanded to include acting as a virtual Chief Information Security Officer (vCISO) and leading information & cyber maturation programs for a global organization, demonstrating his ability to navigate and fortify the digital landscape at an international scale.

Currently, as a Cloud Compliance and bespoke specialty Program Manager for Genesys, a global SaaS entity, Graham continues to pioneer in the field of cloud security, ensuring that data integrity and compliance are at the heart of cloud operations. His passion for security extends beyond professional obligations; he has founded his own company, which aims to revolutionize personal threat awareness and security education through a web-app. This innovative platform empowers individuals to enhance their online safety, reflecting Graham’s commitment to making the digital world a safer place for everyone.

Graham’s diverse experience, spanning from hands-on counterintelligence to strategic roles in cloud compliance and entrepreneurial ventures, positions him as a leader not just in managing digital risks but also in educating and empowering others in digital literacy and cybersecurity.

 

 

Week 1: Getting & Being Online

  • Objective: Introduce participants to the basics of digital existence, focusing on online privacy, security, and communication.
  • Topics Covered:
    • Digital footprint and online profile management.
    • Email communication: creating accounts, composing, and managing emails.
    • File formats and transfers: PDF, JPEG, and others.
  • Activities:
    • Practical session on setting up and securing an email account.
    • Workshop on understanding and managing digital footprints.

 

Week 2: Securing Access

  • Objective: Equip learners with skills to securely access and manage online services and accounts.
  • Topics Covered:
    • Public WiFi risks and safe practices.
    • Online banking and sensitive account access.
    • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), browsers, and VPN usage.
  • Activities:
    • Interactive module on setting up MFA for personal accounts.
    • Group discussion on best practices for using public WiFi and VPNs.

 

Week 3: Transferring & Managing Data

  • Objective: Focus on skills for effectively managing and safeguarding digital data.
  • Topics Covered:
    • Techniques for copying, pasting, and transferring data.
    • Creating and managing digital signatures; accountability in digital actions.
    • Data backups and preservation strategies.
  • Activities:
    • Hands-on activity on data backup and recovery methods.
    • Case study analysis on the importance of digital accountability.

 

Week 4: Surfing the Web & the Cloud

  • Objective: Develop an understanding of the web, cloud computing, and digital communication platforms.
  • Topics Covered:
    • Navigating web browsers and understanding the web’s structure.
    • Engaging responsibly on social media and identifying fake news.
    • Using cloud services effectively for storage and collaboration.

    • Group project on evaluating information credibility on social media.
